>Puerto
Nuevo, The
Lobster Capital of Baja
The
village of Puerto
Nuevo was founded in 1956
and named after a nearby Newport
cigarette sign that then served as a
directional landmark. The Plasencia
family had the first restaurant,
which still exists. Puerto Nuevo
grew gradually until the 1970s
when it experienced a tremendous
growth rate as more and more
restaurants began to open their
doors, attracting even more
tourists. Today, Puerto Nuevo is
home to about 40 restaurants all
serving the same thing. Almost a
million lobsters are consumed in the
Rosarito coastal areas each year
with most of them served here in the
village and "Puerto
Nuevo-style" is now a
world-famous synonym for the
exquisite lobster found here.
